Ask a lawyer on the topic of Immigration law

How can I bring family members from my home country to Germany?

Dear lawyer,

My name is Bernd Dörr and I have been living in Germany for five years. My family still lives in my home country and I would like to bring them to Germany so we can be together again. Unfortunately, I have no experience with immigration law and do not know what steps I need to take to bring my family members here.

My wife and children are very important to me and I am very worried that we will have to remain separated. It burdens me greatly that we cannot be together and I am determined to find a solution to bring my family to Germany.

Could you please explain to me what requirements need to be met for my family members to obtain a visa for Germany? What documents are needed and how long does the process usually take? Are there specific financial requirements that I need to meet? And what options are available if my application is rejected?

I would be very grateful if you could answer these questions for me and provide possible solutions to bring my family to Germany. It means a lot to me that we can live together as a family in Germany again.

Sincerely,
Bernd Dörr

Dear Mr. Dörr,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding family reunification in immigration law. It is understandable that being separated from your family is very distressing for you and that you are longing for a solution to bring your family to Germany.

In order to bring your family members to Germany, certain requirements must be met. Typically, your family members will need a visa for family reunification. They must be recognized as close family members (spouse, minor children) by you. Additionally, you must have adequate housing to accommodate your family.

For the application for a visa for family reunification, the following documents are usually required: valid passport, marriage certificate or birth certificate of the children, proof of sufficient health insurance, as well as proof of sufficient financial means to support your family's livelihood in Germany.

The process of family reunification can vary in duration depending on the case and the authority. It may take several months for the application to be processed and for your family to come to Germany. It is important to be patient and to plan the necessary steps early and carefully.

In terms of financial requirements, you typically need to demonstrate that you have sufficient financial means to support your family's livelihood in Germany. This can be done by providing salary statements, employment contracts, or other income proofs.

If your application for family reunification is rejected, you have the option to appeal and potentially take legal action in administrative court. In such cases, it is advisable to seek advice from an experienced immigration lawyer to protect your rights and find possible solutions.

I hope this information helps you and that you find a way to bring your family to Germany. If you have any further questions or need legal assistance, I am happy to help.

Sincerely,
Leonie Eiserfelder, Immigration Lawyer
