Ask a lawyer on the topic of Immigration law

Can I study in Germany as a foreigner and what conditions apply for that?

Dear lawyer,

My name is Simon Busse and I am a foreigner who wishes to live in Germany. I have heard that it is possible for foreigners to study in Germany, but I am unsure of the conditions that apply. I come from a non-EU country and have already completed my high school diploma. However, I have heard that there may be certain requirements that I need to meet in order to study in Germany.

I am currently in an uncertain situation, as I would like to start my studies in Germany but am not sure if I meet the necessary conditions. I am worried that I may not have the right documents or that my qualifications may not be sufficient to be admitted to a German university.

Therefore, I would like to know from you if it is possible for foreigners from non-EU countries to study in Germany and what specific requirements apply. Do I need to prove certain language skills? Do I need a visa or residence permit to study in Germany? What steps do I need to take to start my studies in Germany?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me and provide me with information on the conditions for foreign students in Germany.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Simon Busse

Dear Mr. Busse,

Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in studying in Germany. As an attorney specializing in foreigner law, I can assist you and provide you with information regarding the requirements for foreign students in Germany.

In general, it is possible for students from non-EU countries to study in Germany. However, there are some requirements that you must meet in order to be admitted to a German university. Firstly, you need to have a recognized school leaving certificate equivalent to the German Abitur. Since you have already completed your Abitur, you already meet this requirement.

Additionally, you usually need to prove sufficient language skills. For studying in Germany, a proof of sufficient knowledge of German is usually required. This can be done by passing a German language test such as TestDaF or DSH. There is also the option to participate in a language course before starting your studies to improve your German skills.

Regarding your visa or residence permit, you typically need a student visa to study in Germany. You can apply for this visa at the German embassy or consulate in your home country. For the visa application, you usually need an admission letter from a German university as well as proof of sufficient financial means to live and study in Germany.

To start your studies in Germany, you should first apply to German universities. Information on application deadlines and procedures can be found on the respective university websites. Once you have been admitted, you can apply for your student visa and start preparing for your studies.

I hope this information was helpful to you and supports you in your endeavor to study in Germany. If you have any further questions or need assistance, I am happy to help.

Best regards,
Adele Gerdes, Attorney
