Which examinations are important for a gynecological check-up?

Dear team of the online consultation,

My name is Tatiana Knorr and I am reaching out to you because I have some questions regarding gynecological preventive examinations. As a woman in her prime years, I am aware of how important it is to undergo regular examinations for the early detection of diseases in the genital area. However, I am unsure about which examinations are truly important during a gynecological preventive examination and which ones I should definitely have done.

So far, I have regularly had Pap smears done to detect changes in the cervix early on. However, I am not sure if there are other examinations that are advisable and necessary. I am worried that I may be neglecting important examinations and that diseases could be discovered too late as a result.

Therefore, my specific question to you is: Which examinations are important for a gynecological preventive examination? Besides the Pap smear, are there any other important measures that I should undergo regularly to protect my health to the best of my ability? I would appreciate a detailed and understandable answer from you so that I can feel better informed and prepared in the future.

Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Sincerely,
Tatiana Knorr

Dear Tatiana Knorr,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding gynecological preventive examinations. It is very important for women to undergo such examinations regularly in order to detect and treat potential diseases early. In addition to the Pap smear, there are indeed other important measures that should be carried out during a gynecological preventive examination.

First and foremost, the Pap smear, also known as the PAP test, is a very important examination to detect changes in the cervix early. These changes can indicate an HPV infection or precursors of cervical cancer. Therefore, it is important to have this test done regularly, usually every 1-3 years, depending on age and risk factors.

In addition to the Pap smear, other examinations are also performed during a gynecological preventive examination. This includes a breast examination to detect possible changes or lumps early. The breast is palpated and in some cases, a mammogram may also be recommended, especially for women over 50 years old.

Furthermore, the examination of the external genital area and internal organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes is important to detect any changes or diseases. The gynecologist will also pay attention to any complaints or symptoms you may have.

In addition to the mentioned examinations, depending on your individual risk profile, an examination for sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea may be recommended. Counseling on contraception methods and, if necessary, pregnancy testing may also be part of the gynecological preventive examination.

It is important that you regularly visit your gynecologist and address any questions and concerns. This is the only way to ensure that your health is optimally protected. If you have any further questions or uncertainties, do not hesitate to speak with your gynecologist about them.

I hope that my response has been helpful to you and wish you all the best for your future preventive examinations.

Sincerely,
Marie Czakaj
