Menstruation: Is it normal for my period to be irregular?
September 10, 2022 | 30,00 EUR | answered by Christine Widmann
Dear Doctor,
My name is Laura Dietrich and I have a question regarding my menstruation. In the past few months, I have noticed that my period is very irregular. I used to have a cycle of about 28 days, but recently the length of my cycle has been fluctuating greatly. Sometimes it only lasts 21 days, but other times it can go up to 35 days. This is concerning to me and I am wondering if this is normal or if I should be worried.
My menstruation is also much heavier than before and I am experiencing intense lower abdominal pain that I have never had before. It is very distressing to me as it often hinders my ability to cope with my normal daily routine. I am wondering if these changes in my menstrual cycle are normal or if they could indicate a serious health issue.
I am concerned that these changes could affect my fertility and that I may have difficulty getting pregnant in the future if I decide to try. Are there possible causes for my irregular period and what can I do to get it back on a regular cycle?
Thank you in advance for your help and response.
Sincerely,
Laura Dietrich
Dear Mrs. Dietrich,
Thank you for your message and trust. It is understandable that you are concerned about the changes in your menstrual cycle. An irregular period can have various causes, and it is important to investigate them further to determine whether it is normal fluctuations or if there is a condition that requires treatment.
The length of the menstrual cycle can indeed vary and does not always have to be exactly 28 days. A cycle of 21 to 35 days may still be within the normal range. However, significant fluctuations or persistent irregularities should be further examined to rule out potential health problems.
The fact that your menstruation has become heavier and you are experiencing severe pelvic pain is also an important indication that there may be underlying health issues. Heavy menstrual bleeding and severe pain can indicate conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or hormonal disorders. Therefore, it would be advisable to consult a gynecologist to receive a precise diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment if necessary.
In terms of your fertility, it is important to know that irregular menstruation can affect the chances of pregnancy. If ovulation does not occur regularly due to irregular cycles, it can impact fertility. Therefore, it is advisable to discuss your concerns with a gynecologist and consider further diagnostic tests if needed.
To regulate your menstruation back to a regular cycle, it may be helpful to review your lifestyle. A healthy diet, sufficient exercise, and stress reduction can help regulate hormone levels and stabilize the menstrual cycle. In some cases, hormonal treatment may also be necessary to restore hormonal balance.
In summary, it is important to determine the causes of your irregular period, initiate appropriate treatment if necessary, and protect your fertility. Please do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist to further investigate your symptoms.
I hope that my response has been helpful and I am available for any further questions.
Sincerely,
Christine Widmann
