Can I go swimming during my period?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Dora Schäfer and I have a question regarding my period. I am a passionate swimmer and regularly go to the swimming pool to exercise and stay fit. However, I have concerns about whether it is safe to go swimming during my period.
In the past, I have heard that it could be unhygienic or even dangerous to swim during menstruation. I am worried that I could get an infection or that my tampon or menstrual cup may not provide sufficient protection to keep the water clean.
So, can I go swimming during my period without having to worry about my health? Are there any special precautions I should take to minimize the risk of infection? Or would it perhaps be better to refrain from swimming during my period?
I would greatly appreciate your expert opinion and advice so that I can continue to pursue my beloved sport without jeopardizing my health. Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Dora Schäfer
Dear Mrs. Schäfer,
Thank you for your question regarding your period and swimming. It is understandable that you are concerned about your health and want to know if it is safe to swim during menstruation. I can assure you that it is generally safe to swim during your period, as long as you take some precautions.
First of all, it is important to know that menstrual blood is not unhygienic or dangerous. While there is a low risk of bacteria entering the water, modern swimming pool and pool cleaning systems ensure that the water remains clean. Additionally, tampons and menstrual cups effectively absorb the blood, so very little blood should enter the water.
To minimize the risk of infection, I recommend inserting a fresh tampon or menstrual cup before swimming. Change them regularly every few hours, even while in the water. After swimming, shower immediately and put on dry clothing. Avoid walking around in a wet swimsuit, as moisture can promote the growth of bacteria.
If you are using a menstrual cup, make sure it is properly inserted and snug to prevent leaks. It may also be helpful to use a tampon for additional protection. Remember that every woman is different and may need to try different products to find what works best for them.
Overall, you can safely continue swimming while on your period. Just follow the precautions mentioned and listen to your body. If you feel uncomfortable or notice signs of infection, please seek medical attention immediately.
I hope this information was helpful to you and that you can continue to enjoy your beloved sport without worry. If you have any further questions, I am happy to assist.
Best regards,
Sandra Siebert
