Ask a lawyer on the topic of Immigration law

Can I study in Germany as a foreigner and what are the conditions for doing so?

Dear lawyer,

I am contacting you with the question of whether it is possible for me, as a foreigner, to study in Germany and what conditions apply for this. My name is Rolf Krause and I come from Austria. I have decided to continue my studies in Germany because I am convinced of the quality of German universities and colleges.

At the moment, I am still unsure if I meet the requirements to study in Germany. Therefore, I would like to know from you what specific conditions I, as a foreign student, must fulfill. I already have a bachelor's degree in my home country and now wish to obtain a master's degree in Germany.

My biggest concern is that I may not have the necessary language skills or financial means to study in Germany. Therefore, it would be very helpful for me if you could provide me with information on what language certificates I need and if there are opportunities to receive financial support.

Furthermore, I am concerned about whether as a foreigner in Germany I have the same rights and opportunities as German students. I would like to know from you if there are specific regulations or restrictions that I, as a foreign student, must consider.

Finally, I ask you for specific advice and recommendations on how I can realize my dream of studying in Germany. I thank you in advance for your support and look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
Rolf Krause

Dear Mr. Krause,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding studying in Germany as an international student. I am pleased to hear that you are interested in continuing your Master's studies at a German university or college.

First and foremost, I would like to assure you that it is generally possible to study in Germany as a foreigner. However, there are certain conditions that you must meet in order to be admitted. As a graduate of a Bachelor's degree program in Austria, you have already taken an important step in this direction.

One of the most important requirements for studying in Germany is proof of sufficient language skills. Depending on the language in which your program is offered, you will need to provide a recognized language certificate in either German or English. For German, you can take the TestDaF or DSH test, for example. For English, tests like TOEFL or IELTS are common.

In terms of financial resources, as an international student, you will generally need to demonstrate that you have enough financial means to cover your living expenses in Germany during your studies. This can be done through a scholarship, a loan, savings, or support from parents or other family members.

As an international student, you have the same rights and opportunities as German students. However, there are some specific regulations to consider, especially in terms of residence permits and visas. It is important to inform yourself early on about the necessary documents and deadlines to avoid potential issues.

To achieve your dream of studying in Germany, I recommend that you apply early to the desired universities or colleges, compile all necessary documents, and explore possible funding options. I am happy to assist you with any further questions or support.

I hope that this information is helpful to you and wish you success in realizing your studies in Germany.

Sincerely,
Adele Gerdes, Immigration Lawyer
