Ask a doctor on the topic of Urology

Is it normal for me to have pain when urinating?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Felix Werner and I am reaching out to you because I have been experiencing pain while urinating lately. These pains are present both during and after urination. I am worried because I have never had such symptoms before and I am not sure if this is normal or if it could indicate a serious problem.

I have no previous medical history in the urology field and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I drink enough water and pay attention to a balanced diet. However, the pain while urinating continues to bother me and affects my quality of life.

Therefore, I kindly ask for your professional assessment of my symptoms. Are these pains while urinating normal or could they indicate a urinary tract disease? What possible causes could be behind the pain and what treatment options are available to alleviate the symptoms?

Thank you in advance for your support and expertise. I look forward to hearing back from you and learning more about my situation in order to potentially take appropriate measures to improve my symptoms.

Sincerely,
Felix Werner

Dear Felix Werner,

Thank you for your message and trust. It is important that you consult a specialist when experiencing such complaints, in order to receive an accurate diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment measures.

Pain during urination can be caused by various factors, so it is important to examine your symptoms more closely. In your case, since you have no prior medical conditions in the urology field, it is even more important to identify the cause of your complaints.

Pain during urination may indicate a urinary tract infection, also known as cystitis. This infection is usually caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract and triggering inflammation. Typical symptoms include pain during urination, increased urge to urinate, cloudy urine, and possibly fever. Another possible cause of your complaints could be stones in the urinary tract, which can also cause pain during urination. Other causes could be prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) or an overactive bladder.

To determine the exact cause of your complaints, I recommend scheduling an appointment with a urologist. The urologist will conduct a thorough examination and, if necessary, perform further tests such as a urine analysis, ultrasound, or cystoscopy to identify the cause of your complaints.

Depending on the diagnosis, there are various treatment options available. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for a urinary tract infection to combat the infection. For urinary stones, various therapy options such as shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or endoscopic removal may be considered depending on the size and location of the stones. For other causes, appropriate therapies will be tailored to your individual needs.

It is important not to hesitate to seek medical help to clarify your complaints and initiate appropriate treatment measures. The earlier the cause is identified and treated, the better the chances of recovery generally are.

I hope that my explanations have been helpful to you and I wish you all the best for your health. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if you have any further questions or uncertainties.

Best regards,

Ben Busse
