Ask a doctor on the topic of Radiology

Can I interpret the results of a radiology examination myself?

Dear Radiologist,

My name is Erik Hohenwarter and I recently had a radiology examination. The results were given to me, but unfortunately, I could not fully understand them. I tried to search for information on the internet to interpret the images and reports myself, but quickly realized that this is a very complex topic.

My concern is that I may be overlooking important details or interpreting them incorrectly, and therefore not getting an accurate assessment of my health situation. I want to ensure that I understand the results correctly in order to take further steps if necessary in a timely manner.

Therefore, my question to you is: Can I interpret the results of a radiology examination myself? Are there ways for me to educate myself on this without having medical knowledge? Or is it advisable to schedule an appointment with a radiologist who can explain the results to me and potentially recommend further tests?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could assist me in this matter. It is important to me to be able to assess my health correctly and receive the best possible medical care.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Erik Hohenwarter

Dear Erik Hohenwarter,

Thank you for your message and for trusting in my expertise as a radiologist. I understand that you are concerned about how to correctly interpret the results of your radiology examination in order to assess your health situation accurately.

First and foremost, I would like to emphasize that interpreting radiological images and reports is indeed a complex matter that requires specific medical knowledge. Therefore, it is not advisable to interpret the results of a radiology examination on your own, especially if you do not have a medical background.

It is important to understand that radiologists have special training and experience to analyze and interpret images and findings correctly. They can not only explain what is seen in the images, but also identify possible causes for the findings and recommend further tests or treatments if necessary.

Therefore, I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with a radiologist who can explain the results of your examination to you. This way, you can ensure that you receive a well-informed assessment of your health situation and, if needed, take timely further steps.

It is important that you take care of your health and receive the best possible medical care. A radiologist can help you understand the results of your examination and plan the next steps together with you.

I hope that my response is helpful to you and I am at your disposal if you have any further questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need assistance.

Sincerely,
Helma Rothwiller
