Why do I constantly have earaches?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Ulrike Vollbrecht and I have been suffering from constant ear pain for some time now. It started about two months ago with mild pain in my right ear, which I initially attributed to a cold. However, the symptoms have not improved and have become chronic. The pain is sharp and pulling, especially when swallowing or yawning. Additionally, I feel like my right ear is partially blocked and my hearing has worsened.
I am worried that it could be a serious condition causing my ear pain. Could it be a middle ear infection that is not healing? Or is there possibly an injury in the inner ear causing the pain? I have already tried ear drops to alleviate the symptoms, but unfortunately they have not provided long-term relief.
Could you please help me identify the cause of my constant ear pain and suggest possible treatment options? I would like to know if further examinations such as ear flushing or a hearing test are necessary to make an accurate diagnosis. I hope you can assist me and I am grateful for any response.
Sincerely,
Ulrike Vollbrecht
Dear Mrs. Vollbrecht,
Thank you for your detailed description of your symptoms. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from constant ear pain and that the previous measures have not brought any relief. It is important to identify the cause of your symptoms in order to initiate targeted treatment.
The symptoms you described could indicate various ear-related conditions. One possible cause of your complaints could indeed be a middle ear infection. In acute middle ear infections, an infection in the middle ear is often the cause of the pain. If it does not heal properly or becomes chronic, the symptoms can persist in the long term. It is therefore important to confirm or rule out a possible middle ear infection through a thorough examination of the ear.
Another possibility is that there is an injury in the inner ear causing the pain. Injuries in the inner ear can be caused by various factors such as loud noises, pressure changes, or trauma. A detailed examination is also necessary here to clarify the cause of your symptoms.
To make an accurate diagnosis, it is advisable to perform further examinations. Ear irrigation can help to remove any blockages and better detect a possible middle ear infection. A hearing test can provide information on whether and to what extent your hearing is impaired. These examinations can provide important information to find the appropriate treatment for your ear pain.
I strongly recommend that you make an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT doctor) for a thorough examination and diagnosis. The ENT doctor will show you suitable treatment options and help alleviate your symptoms.
I hope that my response was helpful to you and I am available for any further questions. I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gerald Reimann
