How can I treat my dizziness?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Ingo Binder and I have been suffering from dizziness for some time now. It mainly occurs in the morning after waking up and sometimes accompanies me throughout the day. The dizziness is characterized by a strong spinning sensation, accompanied by nausea and sweating. In some cases, the dizziness even leads to a temporary loss of balance, which is very frightening for me.
I have already tried various home remedies, such as drinking ginger tea or doing relaxation exercises, but without noticeable success. I have also visited my general practitioner, but so far no specific causes for my dizziness have been identified.
I am very worried because the dizziness significantly affects my daily life and often makes me feel insecure and restricted. Therefore, I would like to know from you what possible treatment methods are available for my dizziness and if further investigations are necessary to find the cause. Are there any medications that could help me, or do you recommend specific therapy measures such as physiotherapy or acupuncture?
Thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Ingo Binder
Dear Mr. Binder,
Thank you for your message and your trust in my expertise. I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing dizziness and that it is affecting your daily life so significantly. Dizziness can have many different causes, ranging from harmless to serious conditions. It is important that we work together to determine the cause of your dizziness in order to initiate a targeted treatment.
The spinning sensation you described, accompanied by nausea, sweating, and temporary loss of balance, suggests peripheral dizziness, often caused by problems in the inner ear. Possible causes could be inflammation of the inner ear (labyrinthitis), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), or Ménière's disease. Therefore, further investigations are necessary to determine the exact cause of your dizziness.
Additional examination methods may include a detailed medical history, a clinical examination, hearing tests, balance tests such as the Dix-Hallpike maneuver, and imaging techniques such as an MRI. It is important to rule out all possible causes of your dizziness in order to initiate the appropriate treatment.
Regarding treatment options for your dizziness, there are various approaches depending on the cause. In cases of inner ear inflammation, medications such as antivertiginous drugs or corticosteroids may be administered to reduce inflammation. For benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, specific repositioning maneuvers can help reposition the crystals in the inner ear. In cases of Ménière's disease, medications to reduce fluid buildup in the inner ear may be used.
In addition to medication, therapies such as physiotherapy, vestibular rehabilitation, or acupuncture may be helpful in training the balance organ and reducing dizziness attacks.
I recommend scheduling an appointment with an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor) to undergo further investigations and start a targeted therapy. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if you have any further questions or uncertainties.
I wish you all the best and hope that together we can find a solution to your dizziness problem.
Best regards,
Roberta Weinert, Specialist in Otolaryngology
